Workshop- Beginnings ,Middles and Ends!

Guided Imagery

*(Note: a good deal of the process can be used as homework, once they have done the process once or twice. i.e. telling to someone at home writing down sentences and chipps, students can use this method to pull stories from their parents as the method becomes familiar to them)

1)
Close your eyes and go to a place in your memory *Use imagery handout will resend all.

Teachers, if students would like to work on new stories,we suggest these prompts(from "Donald Davis Telling Your Own Stories")
These are strong emotional prompts and should evoke a whole story within a short period of time.

Was there ever a time you got lost or separated from your parents/friends ?

Was there ever a time you got locked out of somewhere? a store, a door , the bathroom

Was there ever a time you got a haircut you were not happy with?

Was there a time you had to go somewhere and didn't want to but when you got there it turmed out to be great?

Can you remember a time when you broke something that belonged to someone else?

2)
Ask students to choose one prompt that really sticks with them or they'd like to think about more and begin with the guided imagery handout (I will re-email all handouts )

3) and 4)When guided imagery is finished , have the students work on their senses page according to this new story they have just worked with and 4)follow up with the chips page to ensure story ingredients are present.

5) Students should (at the bottom of their chipps page) write a first sentence trying to include one of their senses within it and then a last sentence that concludes or has a reflection in it.

6) Students should go into their writing groups and , choose one partner from within the group to begin telling their new stories. (no longer than 4 mins) Listener needs to appreciate what they liked about the story and ask 2 question about the story they would like to know more about.

7) Students should then switch places and begin again.

8) Retell to another partner within the group , and repeat process.
When finished this process , write 5 sentences or draw what they remember most from their story to be used when we come in.

10) Students should have a rough first draft of a story when we return to work with you.

Storytellers will return to work with their first drafts and continue the process.

Students wrote and told fantastic pieces. Any work they would like published I can establish a student page for finished results . They should be edited for grammar before submitting to us as they will then be published online. Submit to me at the address below.
